A 25-year-old Walmart employee was shot and killed inside a store in Hammond, Indiana, on Monday morning, November 2, 2026, after an encounter with an 18-year-old male suspect escalated into a physical confrontation, according to police.

The shooting prompted a major emergency response and turned the Walmart North Supercenter on 5th Avenue into a crime scene, leaving employees and customers shaken.

Hammond police said officers were notified of the shooting at approximately 9:09 a.m. after an off-duty police officer working security at the store reported the incident.

According to investigators, the preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect had been speaking with the female employee when their encounter escalated. What began as a conversation reportedly developed into a verbal disagreement and then a physical altercation.

Police said the suspect allegedly retrieved a firearm and shot the woman multiple times.

She died from her injuries.

Suspect Taken Into Custody at the Scene

An off-duty officer working at the Walmart helped secure the suspect following the shooting. Police said the 18-year-old allegedly walked several aisles away, placed the firearm down and waited for officers to take him into custody.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, and authorities said there was no further threat to customers or the surrounding community.

Investigators believe the victim and suspect knew each other and had been speaking for some time before the confrontation escalated. Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. described the incident as domestic-related, although authorities have not publicly provided a complete account of the relationship between the two.

Walmart Store Closed After Deadly Shooting

The shooting brought a significant police presence to the Walmart at 1100 5th Avenue. Emergency responders and investigators were seen outside the store as authorities examined the scene.

The store remained closed for the rest of Monday while police carried out their investigation.

Walmart expressed sadness over the incident and said the company was cooperating with law enforcement. The retailer also said it was focused on supporting employees affected by the shooting, including providing mental health resources.

Investigation Continues

Police have described the shooting as an isolated incident and said they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation and determine what led to the violence.

The victim’s identity had not been publicly released in the initial reports, as authorities worked to notify her family.

The deadly shooting has left a workplace community grieving and raised difficult questions for employees and customers who were inside the store when the violence unfolded.
