A California high school football community is mourning the death of 16-year-old William Aviles, who was fatally shot during a Halloween gathering in southwest Bakersfield in the early hours of Saturday, October 31, 2026.
Aviles, a football player associated with North High School, was found with serious gunshot injuries after police responded to reports of gunfire near a large gathering in the 3500 block of South Half Moon Drive at approximately 3:35 a.m.
He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Bakersfield Police Department confirmed that officers had responded to the shooting and that the investigation was ongoing. Early reports from police did not identify the teenager, but subsequent reports named him as Aviles.
A young football player remembered
Aviles played football as a tight end and defensive lineman. His death has prompted an emotional response from the North High School football community, which shared a tribute remembering the teenager and expressing condolences to those who loved him.
A fundraising page created in his memory described him as a young man with a magnetic personality, confidence and maturity beyond his years. The tribute also spoke about his close family, including his parents and three younger sisters.
The fundraiser portrayed Aviles as someone who had big ambitions and continued working toward a better future despite facing challenges. His family and friends are now left to grieve a life cut short at just 16.
